A personal comic by SAW member and Alumni, Kevin Curley, regarding process, growth, and identity as a cartoonist.

————

“Something that’s been on my mind.

This is a comic I drew yesterday. It was prompted by a rejection from a fest I applied for recently and someone telling me ‘Your social media draw isn’t high enough to warrant inclusion in something like that.’ That made me feel kind of not good. Is our inclusion in real world comic stuff so closely tied to the numbers we put up online?”

-Kevin Curley

Have you experienced these feelings? What are your thoughts?

I personally believe there are some organizations that will look at numbers instead of just art, and others will care for art over numbers. Or both. It depends where their priorities lie. If it's in money and more exposure for an event, they may look more at numbers. If it's finding depth; truth; and unique artwork; they may look at art. Some consider both. It's all arbitrary, so I just make my art for myself. - Karlo Antunes
