About this event

Back in-person! Tom Hart returns to run a Week-Long Comics Workshop for Students, Teachers and other Visionaries at our Gainesville Studio!

This workshop will be tailored to the workshop cohort and will probably include:

  • 3 or 4 mini-comic making workshops on different themes.

  • Collaborative projects.

  • Pedagogical discussions, on how we can use comics to reach people, communicate and how to teach with comics to any population.

  • "Rummage sessions" in which we look through the SAW library for inspiration and make specific guided projects based on what we find.

  • Outdoor life/art activities including potentially a Florida Springs trip, or a wildlife trip.

  • Quests of various kinds, turned into story.

  • History dive!

  • Imaginative exercises.

  • Interactive exercises.

  • Personal stories and myth.

  • Storytelling card games.

  • Evening social events including karaoke at Depot Park.

This will not be a single-project workshop, but instead will focus on discovery and the potential of comics and its role in our life and work.

We're so eager to see you again!

When - Monday July 25 through to Friday July 29

Where - This is an in person event. This is not virtual. So jump in your car/ride your bike/take a stroll down to the SAW/GFAA building, 1314 S Main Street, Gainesville, Florida. Park next to the gallery or in the Winn Dixie parking lot. Enter through the side gate to the left hand side of the building (don't worry, there will be signs).

Who - This program is focused on discovering comics' use in a classroom, even our own as lifelong learners. We're hoping to bring together educators and community visionaries to learn how comics can be used to focus a light on life, to help build community and empower all.

Our Covid policy - As of February 2022, we encourage all members of our community to be vaccinated. We are continuing to ask people to wear masks during workshops and when they're in the space with 3 or more people. Hand sanitizer and masks are available, as well as increased cleaning (especially after high traffic/special events).

If anyone feels symptoms they are asked to notify us and stay at home until they've received a negative test. We're a small group who are good friends, lets stay safe and protect each other.

Please reach out to Emma @ SAW if you have any questions or require accommodations to attend.
