We will learn some of the principles of adaptation, read a few examples, and create short adaptations of our own. For the final session, we’ll share our work!

About the Instructor
Martha Kuhlman
I’m an educator. I’ve been teaching graphic narrative at the college level at Bryant University for over a decade, and I love to see the work that students produce for the final projects. This is why I’d like to work with you! Reading and creating comics with other people is magical.
I’m also part of the comics community, having earned a certificate from the Year Long SAW program in 2023-2024. I’ve moderated panels at comics festivals MOCCA and MICE, and was an Ignatz Judge in 2024. Locally, I’ve co-run PVD Drink and Draw at RiffRaff bookstore in Providence, RI for over two years. My work has been published in Saw anthologies Up to Code, Field Notes and Solstice magazine online. Two of my translations of Czech comics are published with Graphic Mundi (BALD and Heartcore by Stěpánka Jislova), and shorter excerpts from Elephants in Marienbad (by Mašek and Baban) are online in Words without Borders and Shenandoah Literary Magazine. I’ve published two academic works on comics: Chris Ware: Drawing is a Way of Thinking (2009) and Comics of the New Europe (2020).
