What’s been going on at SAW lately? Check out what we’ve all been up to the last few weeks with the SAW gang, SAW courses, and the Mighty Network groups!

Our Six-Month Graphic Novel Intensive kicked off at the beginning of June and students are sharing their ideas or honing in on their ideas for the Graphic Novel they’ll be working with for the remaining 6 months of the course!

6 MONTHS? You read that right. Why 6 Months and what does the entail?

First, what is this program?
It is an intensive cohort based program of people all working on the same thing: major progress on their graphic novel.

What will the SAW instructors give us?
-Lots of expertise and wisdom,
-Gobs of hours and pages of pre-recorded lectures and instruction,
-Near-daily engagement and guidance via the online community and weekly zoom calls,
-Accountability, planning and goal setting.

Will you answer all my questions?
Will I get one-on-one mentoring?
Will you write and draw my pages for me?

No, no and no 😊😊.

😊😊 Ha ha, we WILL try to answer all your questions, and we are reasonably sure someone in the group will. It depends upon how many you have. We are trying to anticipate your stumbling blocks and struggles, so we will be there for you, but we also know that sometimes the answer is to just do the work...

😊😊 One-on-one mentoring is reserved as an additional service and we'll have lots of resources available for that if you wish.

😊😊 Of course we won't write and draw your pages for you, but we will LOVE IT WHEN YOU DO!

More updates on student work in the future! Stay tuned.

WE’RE MAKING ANTHOLOGIES

SAW recently began to make Anthologies for exclusive SAW groups!

In the past few months, we’ve published a Comics Flow Ongoing Course Sci-Fi Anthology titled Air: On/Off a Year-Long Program Anthology made up of student exercises using Silent Nancy Panels and personal memories, and a Graphic Novel Development Anthology titled Meanwhile.

Right now, we’re working on a Year-Long Program Anthology featuring our 2021 Year-Long students’ Final Projects, a Graphic Memoir Anthology, and a Pandemic Anthology!

THAT’S A FRICK LOAD OF ANTHOLOGIES!

Want in on our anthologies currently in the works?

Our PANDEMIC ANTHOLOGY is open to anyone in an EXCLUSIVE SAW MEMBERSHIP!

What's an exclusive SAW group? Some examples of SAW's Exclusive Groups include the Year-Long Program 2020-2021, Graphic Novel Intensive Groups, Comics Flow Ongoing Group, Graphic Memoir Group, the SAW ALUMNI CIRCLE and more! Basically, if you're in an ongoing course group or taking a SAW class, you're invited to submit!

If you're a SAW ALUMNI and not in any of the above courses, join us in the SAW ALUMNI CIRCLE offered on a sliding scale, with access to Monthly Pro-Calls, and also have access to THREE free courses by Tom Hart!

Comics Flow, or more formally known as the SAW FLOW MEMBERSHIP, is one of SAW’s MOST AFFORDABLE exclusive memberships with access to PRO-MONTHLY CALLS, feedback and exercises, and 3 free courses: Let's Make a Holy Book; Tom's Prompt Bouquet; and Get Seen, Get Good, PLUS the Storytelling Flow booklet and other bonuses.

FREE THURSDAY DRAW JAMS!

Throughout the week we always have free, community-run virtual Draw Jams via Zoom run by Barry Sawicki! You can find the links embedded in SAW's Mighty Network, with regular updates about times and themes. This past Thursday, we talked about Ethics and Comics - what stories can we tell and whose story can’t we tell? Next week, join us as well discuss what a graphic memoir is, and what it is not. Do you have any ideas?

Come draw with us and chat about comics! Free!

NEW! FRIDAY COMICS READING VIA ZOOM!

SAW has a fairly new event on the last Friday of every month!

“SAW’s newest, live, virtual and FREE event: Friday Night Comics Readings.

On the last Friday of the month we bring together four members of our online community to read from their recent or in progress work.

In our second Friday Night Comics Reading event we will hear from our SAW online students stories of wonder, excitement and reconciliation. Featuring Kevin Curley, Erin Fitzgerald, Karen Knighton and a bonus reader to be confirmed on the night.

This is a FREE live performance, not workshopping. Come ready to be entertained and to experience comics in a different way.

This event will be recorded and posted to our YouTube with captions. There will be unrecorded time at the end of the performance to mingle and catch up to close out the week.

We look forward to seeing you there!”

- Emma Jensen, SAW Instructor And Program Director
