Thoughts from Tom Hart:

“A student I adore asked this question...

Q. When you're experimenting your way through a story, in that two-way-street process, do you ever worry that you won't get it right? or do you come at it with such little pre planning that you're not too invested in viewing it any one way, and are able to be more flexible w it?

And I wrote:

A. I worry all the time! Yeah.

I try to not be too invested but also train myself to only have good options to choose from. That's super hard. Most of that is: read interesting things, watch interesting things, push yourself to go beyond the options you've already limited yourself to but been unhappy with.

For instance, i keep doing the same lousy ending to comics. I don't like it. A character gets so overworked they make a grand gesture which is seen as ludicrous or not at all on some receiving end.

So I have to give myself better options but I haven't done that yet. 🙁

24 hour comics helped a lot. I did like 5 of them. And all were interesting and surprising. A couple were actually good. All of them came out of thin air. Or really, from my influences so that's what I mean by give myself better options.

WHAT OPTIONS DO YOU GIVE YOURSELF?”
