2022-23 Year Long Program Student Comics Reading
THIS WEEK, we will feature 8 recent graduates from our year-long certificate program reading the final stories.
Original Student Success: Sally Cantirino
Sally did the assignments, but she did them her way.
She argued with her instructors, but that was a form of listening.
And she took advantage of every tool around her at SAW, whether it was the pens, brushes, ink, and Bristol board, or our Risograph machines with the weird colors, and the goodwill around the school (and the frequent parties and art shows we would hold) and she made lots of STUFF with what she had, and made herself VISIBLE.
Stay Weird!
Some wise words from SAW Instructor, Jess Ruliffson, on just MAKING THE WORK and not worrying about the rest. Read on to see what she means.
Student Spotlight: Jeff Eggleston
This week, we’re sharing some words, thoughts, and work from SAW student, Jeff Eggleston, as he posted in the SAW Online Community!
See how Jeff spent his Labor Day last week.
Making Comics Hurts! Is This You?
We all have different set-ups, different positions we like to be in when we draw, different places we like to work. Whatever your way of working, if you’re having BACK-PAINS, WRIST PAIN, NECK PAIN, or more, check out this great read!
Keep Characters Consistent (or Not)
Recent post excerpt from SAW Founder and Instructor, Tom Hart, in our Six-Month Graphic Novel Intensive on keeping characters consistent… or not. A discussion about the two extremes and the in-between. Read more.
SAW Alumni Miranda Harmon New Book!
Taking the chance to celebrate SAW in-person Alum, Miranda Harmon! The middle grade book she drew, 'Mayor Good Boy', came out this week with Penguin Random House! Woo! Don't forget to let us know about your comics wins in the big, bad world outside the network! We want to hear about it!
On What Matters: 2020-2021 SAW Certificate Program Anthology
PRE-ORDER! On What Matters represents some of the ambitious works developed during the online Year-Long Comics Certificate Program at the Sequential Artists Workshop (SAW) from Sept 2020 to May 2021. From responses to course exercises to deliberations on life and death and haircuts in isolation, it brings together the far reaching work of 26 different artists from around the United States and beyond.
What is Your Artist Like?
What is your artist like? What is your WRITER like? How else are the two separate for you and what metaphors work for you?

Make Small Things and Finish
Draw the critic. Have a dialogue with it. Talk to it. Pick it with pins. Visualizing the internal struggles we have usually helps (a little). You just gotta transfer your understanding and competence with finishing something you can typically finish to comics. Not your competence with the medium, just your competence with finishing.

Announcing SAWs Resident Teaching Artists for the 2021-22 in person school year: Andi Santagata, Casey Nowak and Melanie Gillman.
The Small Project BEFORE The Project
For anyone working on what feels like (or is) a "big idea" and not knowing how to start. OFTEN, a creator will make a small piece, either to get moving, or not realizing it is about to become a bigger thing. This is great, and it's encouraged! See more.

Abstract comics and lyric connections
One of my favorite things to do in class is make abstract comics with emotional content. Today’s group made these great books below.
